Arthur Penn's saga is too episodic and the acting is uneven, but film's scope is ambitious, the issues socially relevant, and it centers on a new type of Amrican heroine, one in love with all her husband's friends--call is menage a quatre.

FOUR FRIENDS is a compelling tale chronicling the lives of four friends growing up in Chicago during the late 1960s. Craig Wasson plays the son of a Yugoslavian immigrant who deals with the tragedy and happiness life doles out to him and his three friends as best he can. Their lives cross and diverge many times over the years, sometimes for good, sometimes not. The four friends are brought together by a mutual love for one another, torn apart by the changing world and bad choices, and brought back together as they each find their friendship the strongest part of their lives. Documenting the experiences of the friends over a decade, the film manages to condense the time nicely, sustaining the emotional tension and the well-drawn, detailed characters. The film deals with such themes as father-son relationships, unrequited love, secrets, success and failure, growing older, and the importance of friendship. FOUR FRIENDS can be seen as an influence on such later films as THE BIG CHILL and ST. ELMO'S FIRE. [More]

Reviews for Four Friends
Some say this is a better-than-average film that effectively captures the tumultuous sixties and the young folks who were caught up in the craziness of it all. I don't see it.
Steven Teisch's outstanding screenplay charts one young man's coming-of-age during the 1960s amidst a swirl of changes.
